Welcome to

Alternative Bucharest

street art & urban culture tour

plus: history, architecture, art and other sweet delights

the city

Bucharest is a city of strong contrasts. A relatively young city with old mentalities; right at the gates of the Orient, hopelessly influenced by the West but belonging to neither.

the sites

Having street art as a target we will meander through the streets of Bucharest where we will find:

  • quaint neighborhoods full of history
  • landmark or strange buildings
  • belle époque and modernist architecture
  • the first graffiti library in Romania
  • hip hang out places frequented by locals

“all art was contemporary”

When we first started this tour it was concentrated around street art and urban culture. Later we realized that as much as we love these forms of expression they can’t make much sense to the traveler without some context, without some history. simply because, as someone said,: “all art was once contemporary” .

slow travel for fast people

slow travel for fast people

What is slow tourism?

We  believe very much in the slow movement: slow food, slow cities, slow design, slow living.

You are on holiday. You should never have a schedule in your holiday. That’s why we start  with lemonade and a quick chat about what you’ll see on the tour.

Slow tourism also means:

  • good connection with the local community
  • authenticity
  • cohabitation
  • support for the local artists
  • enjoy the experience
  • time to wonder and understand
  • take plenty of photos.

Music workshop

A session with Poetrip

If you feel like jamming with Romanian’s weird and fluffy leftfielders  here’s your chance.   We will visit their studio (no it’s not a garage) pick up their instruments and under their not-so-carefully supervision will proceed to jamming the night away. First beer’s on the house.

PRICE:17 EURO

Described as a mixture of krautrock and Japanese psychedelia, Poetrip is a band who became popular by promoting their music as a dadaist manifesto. They make use of pop clichés to convey attention to absurd and often psychedelic musical contexts.

Location: CAROL 53 Duration: 3 h

  • “the south-westerners who vandalized music and poetry”- amdraci
  • “you aren’t doing anything serious with your life and you imagine that crazy
shit that you do is music!” – Stefan(the guitarist)’s father
  • “I’d take you home to play for me all day long. I’d only let you eat and sleep.”-
    Irina Fumarel
  • “your music is so excessively intelligent, it’s a bit too much” – Radu

The guides

Doru is in charge of Interesting Times Bureau and the creator of this tour.

Before launching into alternative cultural tours, Doru used to manage a  video-game distribution company. Afterwards he became a corporate drone, which he liked, working as a business unit manager for an IT company and also as a senior operations manager for an UK investment fund (whatever that means).

His free time, however, was divided between being a party animal, an intrepid tourist and a avid sampler of the local urban arts and culture scene.

Having been in a complicated relationship with his home-city, for most of his life, he decided it was high time someone got serious about showing them foreigners the real meat and bones of Bucharest.
