Meet Ioana

I loved the experience and when I had the opportunity to start doing cultural tours myself, I said why not.

Ioana is part of the ITB team, and we may say she played a big part in shaping our project’s identity. She is most appreciated for her great touring experience, and for being super knowledgeable and exceptionally friendly. We must warn you – that joy of hers is contagious!

Where are you from and what led you to Bucharest?

I was born and raised in Bucharest. I lived in this city all my life. Well….it’s natural for me to be a Bucharestenian, I mean for me, it’s just home.

How did you end up becoming a tour guide?

By allowing myself to try and see what this really meant. Never before have I thought of becoming one :)). I’ve gone on multiple tours, experimenting them from the ’tourist’s shoes’, I loved the experience and when I had the opportunity to start doing cultural tours myself, I said why not. And it was enough to do that once to realize that this was what I wanted to do from then on.

Since it takes a few hours to prepare cozonac, you can have your house smelling like orange and cinnamon for an entire day.

What about Bucharest makes you proud?

All the opportunities we have here. If you want to study a certain subject, you can find a faculty that will suit (in most of the cases), if you want to become a volunteer for a cause, there are plenty of choices to choose from, if you want to watch a movie, to enjoy a concert or to see an art exhibition, there are a lot of opportunities as well. Or, if you want to book a cultural walking tour, again there is a full range of options.

Do you have any favorite local traditions?

The Christmas tradition of making ‘’cozonac’’ – a traditional cake with cocoa and nuts cream, flavored with a lot of spices. Since it takes a few hours to prepare it, you can have your house smelling like orange and cinnamon for an entire day. What else can be better? Maybe the smell of clove coming from a hot, steamy cup of mulled wine ;).

What’s one thing people need to know about Bucharest before they visit?

That it is the capital of Romania, not Hungary’s.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in Bucharest?

Hard to pick one…. Let’s say Carol Park and its surroundings, an area that brings back childhood memories.

What’s your favorite spot in Bucharest?

Academy’s Hill (with all the coffee shops and tea houses hidden in the nearby).

What do you think travelers should eat and drink when in Bucharest?

Favourite thing to eat…… used to be ‘’papanași’’, a traditional Romanian dessert. As a person that has now to avoid gluten, I’m currently trying to find a place for eating gluten-free ones in town. Favorite thing to drink in Bucharest? Definitely a café latte, prepared by some of the best baristas in town.
