Meet Adrian

I was doing this naturally and informally with my friends from abroad when I had the occasion

Adrian is from Bucharest, so no interesting story of how he ended up in here.

How did you end up becoming a tour guide?

I was looking for a side job that wouldn’t take up too much time and that I would enjoy, so because I love history and architecture, as well as sharing my knowledge about the place I live with foreigners – yes, I was doing this naturally and informally with my friends from abroad when I had the occasion – this fit perfectly.

What about Bucharest makes you proud?

Some of its architectural heritage, especially the pre-communist era. I really like wandering around and admiring the many different types of buildings that exist in this city, and not seldomly was I amazed by the great variety of styles and the ingenuity of the design choices for many of them. From the French inspired of La Belle Époque to the modernist forms of the interwar period, from the Ottoman influenced old churches to the local Neo-Romanian style, there is so much to turn your head around!

Do you have any favorite local traditions?

Even though I’m not religious, I like to take part in cracking the colorful Easter eggs with family and friends, since, in the end, celebrations are about bringing people together and having a nice time.

What’s one thing people need to know about Bucharest before they visit?

Since I was mentioning the beautiful buildings of Bucharest, this does have to be taken with a grain of salt, since unfortunately many of them are in a pretty bad condition, some derelict. This is because of complicated legal issues in a post-communist reality, faulty politics and administration, and/or simply lack of funds.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in Bucharest?

I wouldn’t pick one in particular. I think for me, any would do the trick as long as we’re in the area between the center and the middle ring of the city. In this area is where the kind of buildings I mentioned are to be found in abundance.

What’s your favorite spot in Bucharest?

It would have to be somewhere near the University, Elisabeta boulevard and its surroundings.

What’s your favorite thing to eat and drink in Bucharest?

Craft beer and Pho-bo.
