DSC09544

Romania, may not be the first country you would think of when it comes to wine. Even so, due to its millennial wine history, going back to the Dacians and Romans times and the geographical position – laying within the same latitude as France’s main wine regions, with favorable mild temperate climate conditions, Romania is fortunate enough to have one of the most prolific grapes growing area in Europe. No wonder it’s been ranked as the 5th largest wine producer in Europe.

With more than 130 active wineries all over the country, there is a wide variety of choices to please even the most exquisite tastes. From light table white wines like Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Tămȃioasă Romȃnească or Crâmpoșie, to flavourful rose and dark dry red – Fetească Neagră or Negru de Drăgășani, just to name a few, or the bubbly sparkle wines released by Zarea brand – the so-called Queen of Romanian Sparkling Wines, more and more local producers choose to invest their time, skills and dedication to get the finest quality for their wines.

Their effort seldom pays off considering the increasing wave of awards and international recognition Romanian wines are getting worldwide nowadays. Recently the prestigious Gault & Millau, a world-class gourmand community has released The 2019 Gault & Millau Guide to Romanian Wines including 152 types of wine from 63 Romanian wineries and awarding 22 Romanian wines with +90 points. With such impressive references, a visit to one of the Romanian vineyards would be quite an amazing experience.

Just a few hours drive from Bucharest, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, at the very outskirts of the wild Carpathian mountains, lay a few of the most famous Romanian vineyards.

From Rotenberg winery, one of the best producers of Merlots in Romania, to the fresh, elegant and aromatic white wines of Metamorfosis winery such as Muscat Ottonel and Tămâioasă Românească and Ceptura winery popular for one the best old red autochthon wines- Fetească Neagră, or the more and more in vogue ‘new world wines’ from LacertA, the wineries from Dealu Mare are happy to welcome their guests not only with the finest wines but also with all the necessary explanation to enable them to appreciate the quality of the products they will be tasting. A visit to the wineries is always a wonderful opportunity to enjoy breathtaking sceneries and long walks through the vineyards. What can be more peaceful and idyllic than that?

Defo not just a coincidence, some of the vineyards are to be found in close proximity to old boyar mansions, genuine architectural jewelry, often nicely renovated and repurposed as restaurants or hotels.

Consider it an open invitation to an unique experience serving traditional food and the finest wine, while digging in the history and customs of the noble houses of Romania’s olden days and admiring authentic Romanian architectural style.
